In 2019, I wrote my first non-fiction novel–a memoir purposed to bring awareness to molestation especially within the confines of a religious organization. Writing was a dormant gift I never exercised. Over the course of 2 months, I wrote 100 pages of my first novel. Writing became a cathartic means of therapy. On paper I am allowed to release emotions and explore my imagination. If you are a creative, then start with a blank canvas. There are limitless possibilities buried in nothingness.
You may have a passion or a desire to write. You will never know if you really love to write until you first try. Relax, sit down in your favorite space, and just start writing–don’t worry about mistakes or sounding perfect. If you love it, then you will eventually find your voice.
Some nouns will suck every adjective and adverb from you, like a vacuum. It is okay to unplug. Create your world one word at a time.

1. Encourages me to dig deeper into topics that interest me
Some of my favorite topics to write about are race relations, adventure, the black family, mental health awareness, and spirituality/religion. In order to write effectively, it is important to have a grasp on the subject matter. Many times we have surface level knowledge of a topic or are very biased to one version of a story. Our views are somewhat skewed if we only take what the preacher says at face value or we believe everything news outlets report. Every story has three possible scenarios (your point of view, my point of view, and an omniscient point of view). Writing causes you to research and draw intelligent conclusions. After researching, your views may even change, and cause you to evolve.
2. Desire to inspire others and leave legacy
Before I leave this earth, I would love to leave a legacy to my children/family, and inspire all who read my published literary works. My late mother would feverishly edit anything I wrote in grade school and college. She was an impeccable writer. Anything I publish will always be dedicated to her. Her life was an inspiration to me and her words were unforgettable. She jotted her dreams, wrote short stories, and left her black emotions on white paper.
3. Creativity flows without restrictions
If I’m not creating, then I’m not flowing in the river. I feel like I’m on the banks of a river or the edge of a beach. If you on the edge, then get some rest and come back revived and ready to float in an ocean of creativity, thoughts, musings, and ideas. A blank canvas of white paper is waiting to be filled with meaningful, funny, sad, and inspiring stories.
4. Writing is cathartic
Layers of emotions are buried in our subconscious. I’ve learned that anything creative releases those emotions. Singing and writing are definitely an outlet. Although, I will never physically see my mother again, writing, singing, and worshipping through the pain of her passing has helped with the grieving process. Use creativity as your tool and outlet for healing and evolution.
5. My love for words
What we watch on TV or in our lives is often vivid and surreal. I am able to bring those thoughts to life one letter at a time, until each word tells a beautiful story. Words create. I often think of the story of creation.
And God said, “Let there be light.” Out of the darkness, from nothing, his spirit moved upon the surface of the waters. My published words were once just thoughts in eternity waiting to be released.
